Bob Murtaugh

“At Pathway, we work with you to develop and continually improve a medical program that’s right for your practice. In my experience, I’ve noticed no two practices are the same – and I take that to heart.”

Bob Murtaugh

Chief Professional Relations Officer

BS, DVM – University of Minnesota;
MS – The Ohio State University

Dr. Murtaugh joined Pathway in 2015 as chief medical officer. He is a pioneer in specialty veterinary medicine and paved the way for emergency and critical care to become an American Veterinary Medical Association–recognized specialty in 1989.

Prior to joining Pathway, Dr. Murtaugh completed his DVM at University of Minnesota and had a rotating internship in veterinary medicine and surgery at West Los Angeles Veterinary Medical Group before completing his internal medicine residency and MS in veterinary clinical science at The Ohio State University. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (DACVIM) as well as a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC). Dr. Murtaugh was professor of emergency and critical care at Tufts (1984-1998) before venturing into the nonprofit and private sector.

He was chief of staff for Dove Lewis, a nonprofit community emergency animal hospital, in Portland OR, where, in addition to clinical and training activities, he led community programs involving pet-facilitated therapy and grief counseling for owners/animals affected by domestic violence. As regional director at VCA, he oversaw the quality and growth of medical operations in 40 varied general practice and 24/7 ER/specialty hospitals. During this period he continued his own clinical specialty practice and medical director duties in a couple VCA specialty hospitals in Boston and Orange County, CA, until joining Pathway in late 2015.

Dr. Murtaugh has held several board positions including the Veterinary Specialist Outreach and Awareness Project, the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and the American Board of Veterinary Specialties.

Driven by Pathway’s energy and excitement, Dr. Murtaugh feels he is able to make a difference as someone dedicated to the company’s wish to create positive change in the veterinary profession.

When he can find time after taking care of his five dogs, five horses, two cats, two Nubian goats and two mini-belted Galloway steers, Dr. Murtaugh likes to stay active, golf and cook.
