Stephen P. Hadley, DVM, MS, Chief Executive Officer
Prior to joining Pathway as Chief Executive Officer in 2017, Dr. Stephen Hadley served as Chief Operating Officer for BluePearl and Chief Strategy Officer for MedVet. He is the founder of TenTalents Capital, LLC, founding Director of VCA Specialty Animal Hospitals, and served as Group Vice President with VCA for 12 years. Dr. Hadley also founded the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. He earned his BS, MS and DVM degrees from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, IL followed by a surgical internship and residency in Los Angeles. He later earned an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Jasen Trautwein, DVM, Chief Visionary Officer and Co-Founder
While practicing as a clinician in his own hospitals, Dr. Trautwein developed a passion for finding new and better ways to manage his clinics. As a result, he founded Pathway in 2012 to bring management support to the hospitals and alleviate them from burdens and obstacles that were holding them back. Prior to focusing on Pathway, Dr. Trautwein was a member of the AVMA and previous president of the Capital Area Veterinary Medical Association from 2006-2010. He has also been a consulting veterinarian and a board member of the Capital of Texas Zoo since 2003. Dr. Trautwein earned his Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Texas in 1996 and graduated from Texas A&M University in 2000 with a DVM.
Shawn McVey, MA, MSW, Chief Culture Officer and Co-Founder
Mr. McVey has a distinguished career in Veterinary Health Care Administration. Before becoming a partner and the CEO of Pathway Veterinary Management, he served as an industry consultant and speaker recognized around the world for his unique management style and experience in building successful veterinary practices. Mr. McVey was the CEO of Eye Care for Animals (a Veterinary Ophthalmology Company) and the Hospital Administrator at The Veterinary referral Center of Colorado. He is the founder and owner of Veterinary Specialists in Private Practice (VSIPP) and is former Board Member of The American Animal Hospital Association-the first non DVM to ever hold this position. Mr. McVey holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and dual Masters degrees in Political Social work and Marriage and Family Therapy.
Bob Murtaugh, DVM, MS, DACVIM, DACVECC, Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Murtaugh earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1980 from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1984, he completed a Residency in Veterinary Internal Medicine and MS at Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and in 1985 he became Diplomate of ACVIM. From 1984 to 1998 Dr. Murtaugh was a Professor in the Department of Medicine, the Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and the Assistant Dean of Curriculum at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. From 1986 to 1989, Dr. Murtaugh served as Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (became AVMA recognized specialty in 1989). After serving as Chief of Staff at Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital, Portland OR from 1998 to 2000, Dr. Murtaugh joined VCA as the Northeast Regional Medical Director from 2000 to 2010 and as Medical Director and ACVIM/ACVECC Specialist at VCA All Care Animal Referral Center in Orange County, CA from 2010 to 2015. In 2015, Dr. Murtaugh joined Pathway as Chief Medical Officer and is serving as Chairman of American Board of Veterinary Specialties (AVMA).
William Griffin, VMD, Chief Support Officer
Dr. Griffin earned his Veterinary Medical Doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. In 1998, he returned to the University of Pennsylvania to complete an Internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery, and participate in a Radiology Residency program before joining private practice. After working for VCA and helping grow a small private practice in Delaware into a 24-hour hospital, Dr. Griffin purchased a two-doctor general practice in Southern New Jersey and, as co-owner, Medical Director, and Chief Executive Officer, undertook the challenge of transforming that practice into Regional Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center. RegionalVet is a modern, integrated veterinary hospital offering specialty services, 24-hour emergency and general medicine. It also supports a robust referral network through the development of a strong team-driven culture based on standards and protocols. In 2013, Dr. Griffin brought his expertise in operations and practice management to Pathway Veterinary Management as the East Coast Regional Operations Director, and in 2016 he became Pathway’s Chief Support Officer.
Michael Bland, MBA, Chief Development Officer
Prior to joining Pathway in 2015, Mr. Bland worked for Fondren Management LP, a Houston based private investment firm, where he oversaw a number of public and private investments. During his time with Fondren, Mr. Bland worked with high growth consumer and retail concepts in the Food & Beverage, Consumer Products, and Healthcare industries, including his role as Co-Founder of Thrive Affordable Vet Care. Prior to Fondren, Mr. Bland was a Director with Steel Partners Holdings, a global diversified holding company, where he focused on investment activities of the firm within the Retail, Healthcare, Food & Beverage, and Industrial Manufacturing industries. From 2008 to 2010 Mr. Bland lived in Tokyo, Japan and led the equity research efforts for Steel Partners Japan, the largest Asian equities focused hedge fund at the time. From 2001 to 2008, Mr. Bland worked in investment banking, most recently with Jefferies & Co. Mr. Bland earned his MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and his B.A. in Economics, magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania.
David Peppard, Chief Information Officer
Prior to joining Pathway as CIO in 2017, David was the Vice President of Technology for US Acute Care Solutions. At US Acute Care Solutions, he built a technology platform that enabled the company to grow from 380M to 1.2B in 16 months while driving efficiencies and increasing employee satisfaction. He has worked in a variety of industries with the last 14 years in healthcare. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Engineering and Harvard Business School. He remains active with both institutions and assists Vanderbilt with their recruiting efforts and was recently on the school’s Engineering Board of Advisors.
Harry Zimmerman, JD, CPA, Executive Vice President – General Counsel
Prior to joining Pathway in 2016, Mr. Zimmerman had been involved as a key member of senior management in several growing companies over the past 20+ years. These include Encore Medical, a medical device start-up which became a $425+ million revenue enterprise with over 2,000 employees worldwide which was acquired by Blackstone for approximately $1 billion, and Pet DRx, a California based multi-clinic veterinary roll-up. He was also involved with a health care retail services provider that grew from four locations in California to 10 nationwide. He has significant experience in raising funds in the capital markets, both debt and equity, and has managed, negotiated and consummated multiple acquisitions, both in the United States and Europe. Prior to joining the corporate world, he had twelve years of experience in the private practice of corporate, real estate and tax law. Mr. Zimmerman is licensed both as an attorney and as a Certified Public Accountant. He has a B.S. (with honors) in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. (with honors) from the University of Texas School of Law.
Darin Nelson, Executive Vice President – Acquisitions
Mr. Nelson has over 25 years of experience in veterinary industry and currently serves as Executive Vice President at Pathway and Chief Development Officer at Veterinary Growth Partners. Mr. Nelson has spent his entire career working side by side with Veterinarians. His life has been devoted to the advancement of the profession which has led to hundreds of meaningful, often life long friendships with practice owners. Previously, Mr. Nelson served as Senior Vice President of Trupanion. At Trupanion he was responsible for overseeing and managing sales efforts in North America including key strategic partnerships. Mr. Nelson worked closely with Darryl Rawlings the companies founder and CEO to take the company public on the NYSE in July of 2014. Prior to joining Trupanion, Mr. Nelson spent 20 years at VCA Antech, holding several leadership roles. In his last decade with VCA, Mr. Nelson was Senior Vice President of Business Development, and was responsible for hospital and laboratory acquisitions. While at VCA Antech, Darin had direct responsibility in acquiring more than $400 million in hospital revenue while managing more than $50 million of annual reference lab revenues in the strategic accounts group. Mr. Nelson resides outside of Seattle with his wife, young daughter and his dogs, Bentley and Sam.
Drew Dixon, Chief Financial Officer
Prior to joining Pathway in 2017, Drew was Chief Financial Officer at Garretson Resolution Group, a leading provider of technology-enabled business services for the legal community. Previously, beginning in 2001, he worked with Inmar, a technology, data science and business process company as Director of Finance for the Promotion Services Network, serving as its Vice President of Finance and Administration. In 2006 he assumed the roles of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer where he oversaw the Finance, Treasury, Tax, Legal and Risk Management function. Drew held a number of senior-level positions for ATC Logistics and served as a Senior Consultant at Price Waterhouse. Drew is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Wake Forest University where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
